Sherente, a two-spirit teenager from Rhode Island's Narragansett tribe, performs traditional dance in competitions at annual regional pow-wows in New England. While there is no written rule which prohibits two-spirit people from competing in dances different from their birth sex, and pow-wow organizers allow Sherente to register and dance wearing traditional female dress, Sherente questions whether pow-wow organizers are manipulating scores because they believe in White gender roles. Sherente continues to perform with joy and beauty, regardless of insensitive behavior from organizers and others in his native community.
Sherente's enduring courage and self respect are met with an outpouring of support from family, pow-wow attendees, and fellow dancers.
