Between 1819 and 1969, the United States supported (directly or indirectly) the operation of 408 boarding schools targeting American Indians, Hawaiian Natives, and Native Alaskans. The boarding school program, designed to assimilate indigenous peoples, was implemented in 37 states and territories, including 21 schools in Alaska and 7 schools in Hawaii.
