4 April 2013 - Opening Day Demonstration 2013
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 4, 2013
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Join the American Indian Movement, the American Indian community, and supporters in our on-going struggle in Cleveland for dignity as people, not mascots.
Organizers declare that the Cleveland “Indians” team name and logo are clearly racist, bigoted and shameful. We insist that, pursuant to the findings of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, Cleveland baseball abolish their use.
Organizers demand that the Cleveland franchise cease ignoring the Penobscot Nation's 2009 resolution that Cleveland retire the Chief Wahoo image to demonstrate it understands “the disrespect this symbol represents to the Penobscot Nation... and the legacy of Louis Sockalexis.”
Organizers also demand that news organizations examine the historical truth behind the false naming claims of the Cleveland team and give adequate attention to this matter.
Demonstration will be held at 2:00PM Opening Day: Monday April 8, 2013
“Progressive” Field (E. 9th St. Gate C, 100 feet north of the Bob Feller Statue on the grass area)
Organizers will be on hand to answer questions, or contact Cleveland A.I.M. in advance at (216) 533-9443.
