What is up with "Est. 1901" for Cleveland merchandise?

About three times now I have come across some merchandise from Cleveland Baseball that has the "dead Indian head" Wahoo on it, while beneath it are the words "Est. 1901". Am I missing something here? Cleveland Baseball did not adopt the "Indians" moniker until 1915 when sports writers convened to decide on the new name; "Indians" was chosen because the Boston "Braves" won the Series in 1914, and sports writers hoped the Cleveland team — with a new "Indians" name — would do just as well.

Can anyone tell me how such a bold-faced lie can go unchallenged?
