Schools that continue to use Indian imagery and references claim that their use stimulates interest in Native American culture and honors Native Americans. These institutions have simply failed to listen to the Native groups, religious leaders, and civil rights organizations that oppose these symbols. These Indian-based symbols and team names are not accurate representations of Native Americans.

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The American Indian Education Center (AIEC) acknowledges the unfortunate and misguided indictment of our former Executive Director and Co-Founder, Robert Roche (Chiricahua Apache). Mr. Roche has dedicated over 40 years of his life helping the Native American people through the provision of social services, community support, and socio-political activism.

Connecting with Oberlin's Indigenous Heritage

Come and join us as we examine the history of Native Peoples in Oberlin. Cultural demonstrations, drumming and dancing will accompany this event. This event is a follow-up to the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

The Oberlin Heritage Center is a supporting partner of this collaborative community event.

Last Reading of Oberlin Indigenous Peoples' Day Resolution

Come and show your support for Indigenous Peoples' Day as Oberlin City Council prepares to become the first city in Ohio to adopt this holiday. This is the third and final reading of the resolution to adopt; the previous two readings passed unanimously so we anticipate that this resolution will indeed pass. A strong showing of support from indigenous people will be welcome.

Family Fun Fair

Come to our table at Family Fun Fair in Oberlin. We will have games and activities for children and information on Indigenous Peoples' Day in Oberlin. Our table is located near Ottica Eyecare on Main Street in downtown Oberlin.

Opening Day Demonstration 2017

Since 1973, Cleveland American Indian Movement has repeatedly objected to the degrading,racist depictions of Native people by Cleveland Baseball by demonstrating at every Opening Day. We continue to insist that Cleveland Baseball abolish it use of the clearly racist, exploitative and shameful “Indians” team name and the bigoted, despicable “Chief Wahoo” logo.
