Another baseball season is soon upon us in Cleveland, and another season of demonstrations outside "Progressive" Field in protest of Cleveland Baseball's use of the Chief Wahoo logo and "Indians" team name.
For 100 years, Cleveland Baseball has denigrated indigenous people while simultaneously spinning the lie that American Indians are honored by its bigoted and shameful representations of how we look and how we act. All the while Clevelanders have been duped, being led to believe that "playing Indian" by dressing in costumes and painting one's face is not "blackface" under a different guise and color, by the continuing ambition to make a buck. For decades Cleveland Baseball fed Clevelanders the myth that "Indians" referred to Louis Sockalexis, the Penobscot (link is external) who played briefly for the Cleveland Spiders (1897-1899). Why? To make a buck. Marketing such flamboyant wrongs for the sake of profit means that Cleveland's civic pride rests upon racial humiliation and degradation, not “honor”. Isn't 100 years enough?
Since 1973, Cleveland A.I.M. has demonstrated every Opening Day. We continue to insist that Cleveland Baseball abolish its use of the clearly racist, despicable logo “Chief” Wahoo, and its exploitative “Indians” team name. This year we hope you will join the Native community, our supporters, and the Cleveland American Indian Movement in *our continuing ambition to send the message that racism against one is racism against everyone.
