RE: Request for Information on Derogatory Names for Sports Teams

At the 1991 NEA Representative Assembly the following new business item was passed:

Use of Derogatory Names for Sports Teams
The NEA shall discourage the initiation and continued used of prejudicial and derogatory names and symbols of ethnic groups for school, sporting teams, and mascots. The NEA shall communicate this new business item to each state board of education, each state athletic association, and each college athletic association. (1991-109)

The direction of this new business item was carried out during the 1991-92 NEA business year.

The following resolution was passed at the 1992 NEA Representative Assembly:

I-39. Use of Prejudicial Terms and Symbols
The National Education Association deplores prejudice based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender and rejects the use of names, symbols, caricatures, emblems, logos, and mascots that promote such prejudice. (92)
