Events for October 2016

Ohio Historical Society is seeking a Project Manager for possible World Heritage sites in Ohio. Many sites like Serpent Mound and other so-called "Hopewell" sites will be included, and as World Heritage sites they will receive much attention, money, and tourism. As this project is being negotiated, having a Native person or an ally at the helm could ensure that indigenous perspectives are given more weight. Please pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested.

Rios-Montt sentenced to 80 years for Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity

Forums:

The trial of General José Efrain Ríos-Montt in Guatemala has ended and he has been found guilty! This trial was historic for being the first time in which a head of state was tried by the judicial system of his own country (not an international tribunal) for genocide. This process, which began in 1999, is a milestone for indigenous people everywhere and a victory for the Ixil Maya who suffered torture, disappearances, displacement and mass-murder during his brief but brutal reign of terror.

Trial of Rios Montt to Resume Tomorrow (April 30, 2013)!

Forums:

The trial of Efrain Rios-Montt and Mauricio Rodriguez Sanchez is scheduled to resume tomorrow, Tuesday 30 April 2013 at 8.30am. The uncertainty of the trial seems to have been resolved, at least for now. I have included the email message sent to me as verification. This news has yet to hit the wire services. For more information on the trial, see the postings in the forum.

Urgent: The Trial of Efrain Rios Montt & Mauricio Rodriguez Sanchez: 04/20/2013

Forums:

Judges in the landmark genocide trial of former Guatemalan dictator Rios-Montt asked the country's Constitutional Court to decide if the proceedings should continue, as a move to annul the case brought an international outcry that justice be served in the Central American country's long and bloody civil war. Efrain Rios Montt, 86, is accused of overseeing the deaths of 1,771 Mayan Indians during the military dictatorship he headed. Messages to the US State Department and Senator Brown’s office asking for support for the trial to continue to a conclusion and protection for the witnesses, the prosecutors and the judges are encouraged and needed.

Trial of dictator Rios-Montt - Message from SEPA (March 2013)

Forums:

Friends,
For those of you who are interested in Guatemala and know of the work of SEPA, (Santa Elena Project of Accompaniment), there is a remarkable human rights trial that began this past Tuesday [March 19, 2013 -moderator]. SEPA is currently providing funding for an "accompanier" to be with endangered families of victims who are testifying.
