FEATURE DOCUMENTARY (USA)
DIRECTED BY: ADAM MAZO, BEN PENDER-CUDLIP
RUNNING TIME: 86 MINUTES
For much of the 20th century, the United States stole American Indian children from their families to be placed in white homes and in boarding schools as part of a systematic effort to distance the children from their heritage and cultural identity. Nationally, one in four children were living in non-Native adoptive homes, foster care or boarding schools as recently as the 1970s. During this period many children were devastated emotionally and physically by abuse in these environments.
DAWNLAND examines the formation of the first Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the United States, by the Wabanaki (Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot indigenous communities) and the state of Maine. DAWNLAND spotlights immense challenges this commission faces as it works toward truth, reconciliation, and healing for those affected by these atrocities.
